Convex, expanding with age, pale to sulphur yellow, often with reddish tinges, to about 8 cm across

Notes

This species is easily recognised by the strong smell. It is believed to form a species complex. Some authorities consider purple capped specimens to be a separate species, T. bufonium, however DNA studies suggest that it is a colour variant of T. sulphureum.
